As expected Skylar attended the 3rd Annual 24 Hour Plays in Los Angeles presented by Montblanc at The Shore Hotel. Sadly we only have photos from the arrivals and not from stage. Check our gallery for photos of Skylar joined by his friends and co-stars Anna Camp, Gillian Jacobs and Wilmer Valderrama.
Dad’s influence: Long before New City’s Skylar Astin scored breakthrough roles in movies “Pitch Perfect” and “21 and Over,” he was a student athlete who played basketball, baseball and soccer. His father, Barry Lipstein, a garment industry executive, was often the coach — yet he never singled his son out as a star. Instead, Astin says, his dad encouraged respect for everyone on the team: “He taught me how to be humble and how to lead by example.”
Astin, who uses his middle name as a working surname, adds that he’s also been shaped by his dad’s willingness to go the extra mile for those he loves. When the now-25-year-old was first cast in the musical “Spring Awakening,” it was toward the end of his freshman year at New York University. He intended to return after the show’s initial three-week, Off-Broadway run, but if he accepted the part, he’d receive failing grades because of too many missed classes. So Lipstein sprung into action: He met with the college’s deans and his son’s professors, along with the show’s producers and director, until they agreed to a schedule that allowed him to do both. Astin didn’t go back to school once the musical became a Tony-winning smash, but he never forgot his dad’s unwavering support: Now, he tries to imitate his father’s big-hearted gestures, like flying the entire Lipstein clan to Paris for the holidays.
“My dad is the most generous person I’ve ever met,” he says.
Dad’s proudest moment: Though the success of “Pitch Perfect” means young women “have shrines in their college dorm to Skylar,” Lipstein says that his son hasn’t let it go to his head. In fact, when Astin found out that a boy with disabilities was a huge fan, he sent the child a personal video message. But the moment that really made Lipstein a proud papa? It was how his son behaved following a 2010 performance in a production of “Rent” at the Hollywood Bowl. Lipstein watched as hundreds of audience members gathered outside the stage door for a glimpse of the cast, but hardly anyone acknowledged them. “Skylar looked out and said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding.’ He went out and signed autographs for two solid hours,” says his father. “He didn’t have to do that.” “What makes me proud is what he’s accomplished, but also that he hasn’t lost sight of being a good person.”
What’s next: Astin headlines next year’s “Ground Floor,” a new TBS comedy about a young corporate hotshot who falls for a beautiful maintenance worker. In the meantime, he’s up for Best Comedy Actor at the Teen Choice Awards, to be held Aug. 11 on Fox.
I added a video of Skylar walking the red carpet at True Blood Season 6 Premiere and captures of it in the gallery.
